SkullCandy Crush
First off, I am an audiophile and no, that’s not something sexual or illegal – it just means I love sound. Specifically, speakers, amplifiers, headphones and everything that goes with it.
It’s been a hobby of mine since my teens when I used to find speakers and either build boxes for them or take the magnets off!
Having a high quality sound system is one of life’s little pleasures as being able to really HEAR music the way it was intended or appreciate a movie soundtrack in full surround sound is something I believe EVERYONE should do as often as possible.
But, I digress.
The purpose of this post is to not wax lyrical about my passion for all things sound, but to pay homage to a product brand that I have recently come to admire and appreciate.
SkullCandy.
Formed in 2003, SkullCandy has become one of the world’s leading brands in active gear audio products and has collaborated with big names in both sport and music over the years.
Judge a brand by it’s quality, not it’s demographic.
Prior to purchasing my first pair of simple ear buds for gym and general use, I had never really considered them to be a brand that appealed to me , or my age group. Mid 40’s entrepreneur with a family , in my mind, SkullCandy appealed to the younger , active, action-sport market.
I own several pairs of Sennheiser buds , Phillips Studio Headphones as well as a few pairs of Sony Headphones and my buying choice revolves around the quality of sound reproduction and balance.
Simply put, the sound needs to have proper bass, clear mids and crisp highs to really deliver the kind of sound performance that would make me sit up and go ,”WOW,this is what I’m looking for.”
About 3 months ago I decided to try a pair of SkullCandy buds for gym and general use in the day and needed ones that had a mic and could handle phone calls as well.
Looking through the selection at my local Musica, I saw a pair for around R300 and since already had JBLS’s , I decided to give them a go.
Love at first sound.
And it was. I was absolutely blown away at the incredible sound quality that came out of these! Amazing bass, warm resonance and tight drums along with beautifully clear mids and super crisp highs, I became an instant fan!
Plus, they worked with my phone without hassle. Answering calls and switching back to music effortlessly – exactly what I needed.
Even better was that the designers at SkullCandy know a thing or two about offering the proper size buds so that they fit properly , seal the ear and DON’T fucking fall out especially when at gym!
I found them to be comfortable and solid in the ear and could really belt the volume if needed. I believe that the benchmark of great headphones is that they don’t have to be super loud in your ears to deliver performance , especially if you’re driving or at gym.

After that experience , I was hooked and I recently went out and bought a set of their wireless headphones as well so I could cycle and train without the interference of wires and I have to say that they simply impressed the fuck out me.
Easy to use, comfortable and simple to switch between phone and music , my love affair with these truly amazing quality headphones is growing every time I uses them.
Aside from the functionality and ease of use, the sound quality is truly superb. They effortlessly reproduce every single frequency whether I’m listening to Metallica or Goa Trance, it seems that every time I use them ,I hear new sounds and nuance in very familiar music that makes me a appreciate the music and the artist even more and look at that little branded skull with a great deal more respect, appreciation and admiration.
Most importantly though , it allows me to truly appreciate the incredible gift of sound.
So , if you are looking for headphones that can amaze you and bring your music to life in a way that you probably haven’t experienced before, find yourself a pair of headphones with that iconic little Skull and prepare to fall in love with your music all over again.
And that’s the Joburg Truth.
